An Australian threepence dated 1956, issued during the early reign of Queen Elizabeth II and struck in 50% silver.
The obverse features the young Queen’s portrait facing right, surrounded by the inscription “ELIZABETH II DEI GRATIA REGINA F:D:”, meaning Elizabeth II, by the grace of God, Queen and Defender of the Faith.
The reverse displays three ears of wheat tied together, with “AUSTRALIA” above and “THREE PENCE” below. The date is divided across either side of the wheat design. This distinctive agricultural motif represents an important part of Australia’s farming heritage.
A small pre-decimal silver coin from the years before Australia introduced dollars and cents in 1966. An appealing addition to an Australian coin collection, an Elizabeth II collection or a selection of world silver coins.
