An antique British one shilling coin dated 1834, issued during the reign of King William IV (1830–1837) and struck in .925 sterling silver.

The obverse features William IV’s uncrowned portrait facing right, surrounded by the Latin inscription “GULIELMUS IIII D: G: BRITANNIAR REX F: D:”, naming him William IV, King of the Britains by the grace of God and Defender of the Faith.

The reverse design features a royal crown above the denomination “ONE SHILLING”, enclosed by a tied wreath, with the date beneath. On this example, the central denomination has largely worn away, while the crown, wreath and 1834 date remain identifiable.

Dating from the years immediately before Queen Victoria’s accession, this coin offers a tangible piece of nineteenth-century British history. A shilling originally represented 12 old pence, with 20 shillings to the pound.
