An Australian sixpence dated 1960, issued during the reign of Queen Elizabeth II and struck in 50% silver.

The obverse features the young Queen’s portrait facing right, surrounded by the inscription “ELIZABETH II DEI GRATIA REGINA F:D:”, meaning Elizabeth II, by the grace of God, Queen and Defender of the Faith.

The reverse displays Australia’s historic coat of arms, with a kangaroo and an emu supporting a central shield, a seven-pointed star above and the “ADVANCE AUSTRALIA” scroll beneath. “SIXPENCE” curves around the upper border, with the date 1960 below.

Issued six years before Australia introduced decimal currency in 1966, this coin represents the country’s former pounds, shillings and pence system. Its distinctive animal design makes it an appealing addition to an Australian coin collection, an Elizabeth II collection or a selection of world silver coins.
