The Story of Mill Reef – Something to Brighten the Morning

1974 UK stereo vinyl LP on York Records, catalogue number YR 503, complete with its illustrated gatefold sleeve and paper inner sleeve.

An evocative tribute to the celebrated racehorse Mill Reef, combining songs written by Tim Hollier with narration by Albert Finney, race commentary and recorded conversations. Contributors include Peter O’Sullevan, jockey Geoff Lewis and trainer Ian Balding.

The gatefold opens to a panoramic photograph of Mill Reef winning the 1971 Derby. The front features a painted horse portrait, while the reverse includes photographs and an account of his racing career and recovery from injury.

Tracks include Tomorrow in His Eyes, Free and Easy, The Races of Mill Reef, Pour Toi, Kingsclere Morning, Memories of Mill Reef, Don’t Be Afraid, We’ll Remember You and the Pour Toi/Mill Reef instrumental theme.

A distinctive addition to a horse-racing memorabilia collection, or an interesting record for collectors of spoken word and British folk music.

Condition: Pre-owned. The sleeve shows surface rubbing, light creasing and wear around the edges and corners. The vinyl retains its shine but has visible surface marks and some dust. Playback has not been verified, so no formal vinyl grade is assigned.
