A vintage vinyl recording of highlights from Albert Lortzing’s comic opera Zar und Zimmermann, performed in German by a distinguished cast with the Choir and Orchestra of the Vienna Volksoper.
Conducted by Franz Bauer-Theussl, the recording features Eberhard Wächter as Peter the Great, Kurt Equiluz as Peter Ivanov, Ludwig Welter as Van Bett, Renate Holm as Marie and Waldemar Kmentt as the Marquis de Chateauneuf.
Zar und Zimmermann, also known in English as The Tsar and the Carpenter, is one of Lortzing’s best-known works. Its lively story follows Tsar Peter the Great as he works in disguise in a Dutch shipyard, where confusion arises because another carpenter is also named Peter.
