An extraordinary large African Bloodstone hand-carved landscape, weighing approximately 2.8kg and featuring an astonishing amount of three-dimensional detail.
This substantial gemstone carving has been worked into an elaborate mountainous landscape, with rock formations, trees, buildings, pathways and architectural details appearing throughout the piece. Deeply carved openings and overlapping sections create considerable depth, with new details becoming visible as the piece is turned.
The natural stone displays a beautiful mixture of deep forest green, blue-green, grey-green and darker tones, scattered with the distinctive red to rusty-orange markings associated with African Bloodstone.
Rather than occurring simply as tiny flecks, some of the red mineral areas form bold contrasting sections within the carving. These have been incorporated beautifully into the finished scene, standing out dramatically against the predominantly dark green stone.
Other areas range from opaque green through to paler and more translucent-looking mineral sections, creating further contrast within the landscape.
The reverse has been left largely polished rather than intricately carved, revealing another fascinating side of the natural stone. Here, broad dark green areas are crossed by striking rusty red, brown and cream-coloured natural veining and brecciated-looking patterns, clearly showing how varied the material is throughout the specimen.
At approximately 2.8kg, this is an exceptionally substantial carving and a true statement piece for a gemstone collection or decorative display.
