The specimen has a mixture of naturally weathered outer surfaces and freshly exposed glassy faces, where the characteristic smooth, curved conchoidal fracture of obsidian can be seen particularly well. The polished-looking shine is entirely natural to the volcanic glass rather than an applied finish.
Mahogany Obsidian forms when iron-rich inclusions create reddish-brown patterning within black volcanic glass, giving every specimen its own distinctive colouring and markings.
